Over shampooing, excessive styling methods, permanents, dyes and overexposure to the sun are just some of the causes that led to dry and damaged hair. But there is hope. You can restore your hair to its natural glory. However, there are things you will have to go without, but only for a short time, until you are able to bring back your hair to a more manageable appearance.

Tip 1: Do not switch shampoos ~ Most people do not realize that by frequently switching their hair shampoo and conditioner, they are actually causing more harm than good. The hair goes into shock which therefore causes frizzy, dry, flyaway hair. Always use a mild shampoo with a pH level of between 4.5-6.5. Most shampoos will have the pH displayed on the outer packaging.

Tip 2: Reduce the number of times you wash your hair ~ Frequent shampooing will wash away the natural protective oils of your hair, leaving hair frizzy and damaged. Wash hair no more than 2-3 times per week, preferably once weekly for severe damage. Use a dry shampoo in between shampooing.

Tip 3: Reduce the number of hair styling products ~ The harsh chemicals of hair products including gels, hairspray, mousse, and styling creams should only be used on special occasions. Even hair perming, coloring, bleaching, hair straightening must only be done sparingly. Use only products that are free of alcohol. Opt for styling without heat.

Tip 4: Wear hats or scarves ~ Wind whipped hair is one of the main contributors to dry damaged hair. Additionally so is ultra violet rays. If outside on a windy summer day or even a gusty, frosty winder day – cover up!

Tip 5: Trim the ends ~ Hair tends to suffer most at the ends. Even if you are trying to grow your hair out, it is still very important to trim the ends about an inch every 3-4 weeks. Trimming the ends will give your hair a more manageable appearance and it will look healthier too.

Tip 6: Always handle your hair with care ~ Use a wide tooth comb and never brush or comb your hair while it is wet. Use a micro fiber towel when towel drying and let your hair dry naturally. Disclosure: Even though every expert states not to comb hair when it is wet ~ I personally have a hard time NOT doing this, especially after I condition in the shower. I keep a wide tooth comb in the shower just to comb the conditioner GENTLY through my hair. Furthermore, how can someone not comb their hair after being up in a towel, unless you want the "bed head" look. It is just impossible to just let your hair dry naturally. Besides, every hair stylist I have ever been to, always combs or brushes the hair before cutting. Point of Fact: Just make sure your brush and comb are WIDE TOOTH!

Tip 7: Maintain a healthy diet ~ Turn away from the junk food. Eat foods that are rich in protein and especially vitamins for hair growth. Click the links below for more info.
